iTunes Error -9808
9 02 2008When trying to connect to the iTunes Store this afternoon, I could not connect and I got an error from iTunes stating that my connection timed out and that there was an unknown error -9808. So I did a bit of Googling and came up with a few solutions. First you could try to fix your internet settings if you are running Windows XP. Go to Start > Control Panel > Internet Options > Advanced, make sure that SSL 3.0 is checked and TLS 1.0 is checked. Also under Security make sure that the “Check for server certificate revocation (requires restart)” is unchecked. Then click ok and fire up iTunes. This solution worked for me and it may or may not work for you. What is your solution for solving this widespread itunes problem?

Nice one , what a star! I haven’t been able to down load since updating the itunes version. all sorted now!
Sherlock!
You’re Welcome! This should work on all versions of iTunes including the newest 7.6.1
I had the same problem and unchecked the “Check for server certificate revocation (requires restart)”.
It works. Thank You.
For most people, the “Check for server certificate revocation (requires restart)” will definitely fix every itunes connection problem on Windows XP.
I have seen this same solution published in lots of places. My problem is that I uncheck the “check for server certificate revocation” I hit apply, I reboot, and when I go back and check the advanced tab the box is checked again. It’s like something in the system automatically rechecks the box…. Any ideas?
Anonymous: Sorry to hear about your problem. I will look into the problem and hopefully post a solution. Just wondering have you tried the other solution posted at
http://soccerislife8.blogspot.com/2008/02/itunes-connection-solutions.html (copy and paste). If you are having problems connecting to the iTunes Store only, then this solution might work for you. Also, are you running Windows XP?
“Check for server certificate revocation (requires restart)”
where do you find this?
i can’t!
please help!
“Check for server certificate revocation (requires restart)” is located under your internet options. In Internet Explorer, go up to Tools > Internet Options. Then go to the last tab, Advanced, and scroll down to the Security section. It is the fifth box down and make sure it is unchecked. Good Luck!
great stuff… works like a charm!!
what about windows vista?…ive been getting the same message on mine…and ive done all that the itunes support told me to to no avail…my mother is threatening to toss my ipod if i dont get it off her comp and hooked up to my laptop
If you can find the internet options on window vista, try to find the above mentioned options. I’m sorry, i’m not able to test this because I don’t have vista.
You rock, dude! Been battling the 9808 error for several days now and was ready to nuke iTunes. Thanks for making my day!
