iTunes Error -9808

9 02 2008

When trying to connect to the iTunes Store this afternoon, I could not connect and I got an error from iTunes stating that my connection timed out and that there was an unknown error -9808. So I did a bit of Googling and came up with a few solutions. First you could try to fix your internet settings if you are running Windows XP. Go to Start > Control Panel > Internet Options > Advanced, make sure that SSL 3.0 is checked and TLS 1.0 is checked. Also under Security make sure that the “Check for server certificate revocation (requires restart)” is unchecked. Then click ok and fire up iTunes. This solution worked for me and it may or may not work for you. What is your solution for solving this widespread itunes problem?

You’re Welcome! This should work on all versions of iTunes including the newest 7.6.1

I had the same problem and unchecked the “Check for server certificate revocation (requires restart)”.

It works. Thank You.

For most people, the “Check for server certificate revocation (requires restart)” will definitely fix every itunes connection problem on Windows XP.

I have seen this same solution published in lots of places. My problem is that I uncheck the “check for server certificate revocation” I hit apply, I reboot, and when I go back and check the advanced tab the box is checked again. It’s like something in the system automatically rechecks the box…. Any ideas?

Anonymous: Sorry to hear about your problem. I will look into the problem and hopefully post a solution. Just wondering have you tried the other solution posted at
http://soccerislife8.blogspot.com/2008/02/itunes-connection-solutions.html (copy and paste). If you are having problems connecting to the iTunes Store only, then this solution might work for you. Also, are you running Windows XP?

“Check for server certificate revocation (requires restart)”

where do you find this?

i can’t!

please help!

soccerislife8 (15:22:00) :

“Check for server certificate revocation (requires restart)” is located under your internet options. In Internet Explorer, go up to Tools > Internet Options. Then go to the last tab, Advanced, and scroll down to the Security section. It is the fifth box down and make sure it is unchecked. Good Luck!

If you can find the internet options on window vista, try to find the above mentioned options. I’m sorry, i’m not able to test this because I don’t have vista.

What can I do to fix iTunes error -39??!

7 06 2008
soccerislife8 (22:11:23) :

let’s see…um well I can start by asking, what are the specifics of itunes error 39? is it connecting to the itunes store, syncing your ipod, or opening itunes itself? I appreciate your comments!

I have done this in FF and IE, however I am still getting the error message. I am attempting to sync my Nike Plus run kit which runs through iTunes.

mwells123 (17:42:57) :

yeah, worked for me too. and yes, it works in vista also. My SSL 3.0 and TLS 1.0 were already checked in Internet Explorer 7.0, I just needed to uncheck the server certificate revocation box. And vista does not require a restart for this.

Hello =)

Ty so much for this post. Just restarted my iPhone since my usb fell out, during the new 2.0.1 update, and my iphone was fucked, so i had to restore it. But after i restored it, it didn’t allow me to connect to iTunes store.. i was like wtf?!!!! I allready broke my new iPhone? :p

But this guide really helps. Sad, i kinda allready knew about that server certifacation, since i have the similar problem with Windows Messenger Live, but never knew it would be the same problem for this -9808

But thanks man!

Hey there, I’m having the same problem with Error -9808. In the internet options, Windows resets the “check for server certificate revocation*” to be CHECKED upon restart, so I don’t know if this is the problem with iTunes connection or not. Any thoughts?

-SSL 3.0 IS checked
-TLS 1.0 IS checked.
-Laptop running Window’s XP

Thanks for any help.

I had the same problem. We just switched to a new computer with Vista and I wasn’t able to login to iTunes without getting the 9809 message. The support staff at iTunes was not able to help with their first suggestions, so I searched the net and found your solution. It worked great and solved the problem. Thanks so much!
