Contact Sync between your Mac and your EnV2

19 06 2008

Yesterday, I posted a tutorial to help you sync your pictures, videos, and sounds with your EnV2 from your Mac using bluetooth. That article is posted here. Many of you asked if I could also post a tutorial to sync contacts, calendar, and music, and here is the first one: contacts. Although this phone is not yet supported by BitPim, the popular cross-platform application to sync information such as your phonebook, calendar, and contacts to your phone, there is a simple process you can execute until that support is provided. Using the built in bluetooth on your Mac and the bluetooth on your EnV2, you can manually send contacts to and from you phone.

To send contacts from your phone to your Mac, first turn on bluetooth on your phone if you have not done so already by pressing OK > 9 > 3 >left soft key. Now that bluetooth is turned on, follow the instructions here if you have not already done so to pair your Mac and your phone. Great! Now that your phone and your Mac are paired, to send from your phone to your Mac first set up a few preferences. On your Mac, go to System Preferences > Sharing. Click on Bluetooth Sharing and change it to these options. Change the top to Accept and Save, Require Pairing. Then change the folder to lace the received files to. I do not recommend using your desktop but instead create a folder either in your home directory or your desktop named something like “Bluetooth Files.” Choose this folder as the folder for accepted items on the blutooth sharing preferences. Now on your phone, go to the bluetooth menu by pressing OK > 9 > 3, and scrolling down to your Mac’s computer name. Press the right soft key for options, then scroll or press 6 for Send Name Card. The first time you do this, press options, Mark All to send all of them to your computer. Then after when you update a certain contact or add a new one, just select that specific contact. Press done, to send the selected contacts to your computer into the folder that you designated. To add these contacts to your Address Book, simple click and drag them onto the window and it will ask you if you want to import.

If you were to update or add new contacts on your computer, you would want to send them to your phone for mobile access. Here are the instructions. Open Address Book, located in your applications folder or at the bottom of your screen in the dock. Select all of your contacts to export to your phone, then go up to File > Export > Export vCard. Choose your desktop for easy access. This exports them as all one file, but separate contacts. On your desktop, right click, or option click on the vCards file and go down to “more.” Select “send vcards to” and then select your phone, usually LG VX9100. This will send the vCard with all of your contacts to your phone.

The methods listed above will suffice until full support of BitPim is provided. Anyways, why would you need to sync contacts, you usually only have to send one way in the event of an update or a new contact. It is very rare that you update the same contacts differently on each platform. Hope this tutorial helps, and I will post syncing music and calendar at another time. Enjoy!

EDIT: Many people are stating that this does not work for them. It worked for me and I decided to post it to help other people trying to achieve the same thing. Bitpim has been update to version test-1.0.6 and you can find more information here.. Also, exporting vCards, must have at least one phone number included and sometimes when exporting multiple, only the first one gets sent to the phone. Sorry for all of the confusion, if it works for you, great, if it doesn’t, i’ll post another guide when bitpim rolls out full support for contact sync.

@william - Can you tell at which stage in the tutorial you get that error? Any more information would be appreciated.

This doesn’t work. I get a “file transfer failed… internal error” message. Man, I wish it would though. Thanks for trying.

Can someone tell me at which part of the tutorial you are getting that error at? I might be able to help if you can tell me when you get that error. Thanks.

The “file transfer failed” error occurs after you right-click the vcf and choose “more” –> “send to LG vx9100.” It tries, thinks, and then reports the error.

If I change the file type to .jpg then it works, but of course it’s not recognized as a vcf file, and there’s no way to rename it on the phone. Apparently it’s blocking the transfer based on the filename extension.

Anybody wanna take bets that Vzon updated the firmware to get around this capability so they can sell us the Windows software they claim is “necessary.”

My phone software version is VX910v03, hardware revision 1.1, bluetooth version 1.2. Are your versions the same?

is incoming security on your phone set to always connect?
My phone software is VX910V03 hardware revision 1.1 and bt version 1.2, the same as yours.
Have you tried to unpair and repair your Mac with the phone to see if it was one of the settings you chose? I’m working on trying to find the source of the problem. I also edited my article since it seems to be a 50/50 it works or it doesn’t. The next Bitpim release should include full support for contacts.

thanks for posting this article - you’re a lifesaver! it’s not as simple as using isync with my old razr, but it works! after a little experimenting, i found that exporting calendar events from a Mac to an EnV2 was very similar to the method described in your article. you have to drag individual events from iCal to a folder (or your desktop). each event will have the extension .ics. you must change the extension from .ics to the older standard, .vcs for the phone to accept it. make sure you have NO special characters in the iCal event title and it must be a “simple” event (i.e. no event location, notes, etc). i haven’t tested transferring events from the EnV2 back to iCal yet. Thanks again!!

Hey I have been trying this for a few hours and to no success. I made sure all contacts had phone numbers, made the “vcards”, then try to send them bluetooth and I get the same fail error. The phone says its the computer and the computer says File Transfer failed internal error. I downloaded that program but I have to wait until I recieve the USB chord. If you have any other suggestions that would be great. I tried to convert to JPG but not sure how to do it.

@Laura: I’m sorry my tutorial hasn’t worked for you. For some people it just works and others, it doesn’t. I’m not exactly sure why in most cases as the settings are all the same, it just doesn’t seem to work. Just curious, did you export them all as one vcard or did you try to export them one by one just to see if sending just one will work?

17 07 2008
Laura (08:31:25) :

That worked!!! try the bitpim yet?

17 07 2008
soccerislife8 (15:08:28) :

Yeah, I actually did. The contacts support still wasn’t there. The new version did however allow calendar syncing, which unfortunately did not work for me. I was able to send calendar entries from my phone to my mac but not vice-versa. I ended up with a blank calendar on my phone. :( Hopefully they will release a new version so that fixes that bug.

Ed Ski (11:25:49) :

Thank you for this info! I just got the VX9100 and never thought about iSync issues. Seems LG doesn’t conform to iSync’s sync standard. I can’t use BitPim until I receive my LG USB cable. But i did find that I can import vcf files if I export (preference set to 2.1 version of vCard instead of 3.0) each contact individually, I was able to get 50 contacts in relatively quickly. one at a time but still…
Selected name in Addressbook, rightclick, export vCard…, saved in BlueTooth folder I made (per your instructions), made sure extension was not hidden, repeat. Then, after all the vcf files of contacts were done, selected all and rightclick, More…send to LG VX9100…Done! Thanks again!

This does NOT work, as I get the error message

“Failed to Establish Connection to the device”

When, oh when is MS and Apple going to make this as easy as they say it is.

Thx all to anyone who can help.

Variation on a theme: my contacts didn’t appear in my “Bluetooth Files” and search didn’t work. But I opened my Documents folder and — bam! — there they were. No idea how that happened…

soccerislife8 (09:12:56) :

Under system preferences and bluetooth, did you set the directory for the files to go to “bluetooth files?” You might have accidentally left it as documents. Just a thought and I’m glad you were able to figure it out.

5 08 2008
Nicole (11:29:29) :

Yes, I did — but for “Bluetooth File Transfer.” “Bluetooth File Exchange” uses an entirely different set of parameters (under System Preferences –> Bluetooth Preferences).

soccerislife8 (13:18:59) :

sorry, I meant under Sharing in System Preferences. It sounds like you found it though.

Yes, thanks — but I can’t wait until I can sync my calendar! ; )

Brian (17:00:38) :

Thanks for the great info, i would have not known where to start without your help. Like many, I had difficulty exporting to the phone. However, I tried a program named Bluetooth vCard Blaster and this allowed me to export all the files successfully. Hope this helps!

This saved my life. Verizon is claiming water damage to my phone that only has a non functioning screen, everything else in the phone works flawlessly. Somehow I managed to get through all the steps blindly and saved my contacts and photos. Now if you can just get me a tutorial to bring my env2 screen back from the dead…

Kristin (06:15:58) :

Any updates on syncing iCal calendars? I just bought and env2 and love it, but it would be even more awesome if I could sync my calendars.

chewZilla (21:37:56) :

Getting vCards onto the enV2 wasn’t impossible. BUT, I had to manually drag each individual card into a folder (I used the same Bluetooth folder described in the sharing portion of the tutorial), and then I was able to highlight all using Apple+A, and finally right-clicking (Option+Click) on one of the files, selecting More… and lastly, send to VX-9100.

Long story short, if you don’t mind some Carpal Tunnel, export each vCard individually (drag ‘n drop is fastest). Then highlight said vCards, and then do the suggested method of sending file to the bluetooth device.

27 08 2008
chewZilla (21:39:28) :

One last addendum–in case that long rambling wasn’t clear… The cards have to be exported individually, but can be sent to the phone in ONE single right-click -> send to command.
